Nut History

The lesser-known cousin of the cashew, the Brazil nut, originates from the same places in Northwestern Brazil. It is cultivated in Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador and has been a staple food for the native tribes for at least 11,000 years.

Like its cousin, the Spanish and Portuguese colonisation of South America discovered the Brazil nut while exploring the rainforests, but Dutch traders introduced it to the rest of the world in the 1600s. To India, they probably came with European traders trading with local royalty.
